From The Fans
Posted by The Dave
Dave here with the new face of Fan Submissions! I’m re-titling the section as From The Fans. As usual though, I’ll be featuring the wonderful works you, the fans, have sent us! In this new format, I’ve added easier to navigate collapsible frames that hold each category of submission. So, let’s get started!
In the Fan Music department, we’ve got some jams from Charybdis, Kevvviiinnn, pinknoisejake, and Armanky. Charybdis brings the heat with his tune, High Voltage. Kevvviiinnn’s brought some well composed tunes made with some familiar SNES game instruments for that classic feel. Pinknoisejake sent us some excellent atmospheric and battle tracks in an 8-bit-esque style. Last, and far from least, Armanky has created a treat for the ears with some excellent tunes. Definitely have a listen to these guys!
In the Fan Art and Sprite department, we’ve had several submissions from some talented artists. There are title screens by Maskedman, a stunning picture of Chase by PaperMochii, some enemy concepts from Seifer and Carbonking, an interesting new saving concept from PK Mt. Fuji, and a cartoonified Chase from Ryukasu. They’ve done some cool stuff here so take a look!
Now for the ideas and suggestions! There’s an extensive list of well thought out items from Deucy Dee, some enemy concepts from N. Terror, rib78 and Expada, some NPC and other concepts form the-rope-snake, and some neat gameplay ideas from MalixDexide. Nice work guys.
And that’s a wrap! Keep sending ‘em in folks, we love to see what you guys come up with.
And as a reminder, when you send things in, please make sure they follow the guidelines posted on the submit page! And make sure what you submit is actually your work! (Someone had submitted some old mock-up box art we created ages ago.)

Perhaps you can do something to the right hand bar categories. When I click on something, it opens all of the news with the music, art, etc. If you do something like you did here, that would be better. Here, you click on music, and 11 music things pop up. Thus, I suggest putting all of the music pieces on one single page, then link the music category to it. Of course, do it with the other two (art/writing). If you don’t, I can live with this, since this is just a suggestion.

The “Categories” section on the right bar lists all posts with those categories attached to them. They’re like tags. So it’s doing what it was meant to do. However, I could reorganize the fan submissions page a bit so there are categories.

This is great! I really like the music by Armanky! Great effort!
February 27th, 2010 at 3:18 pm
Wow, Armanky, you’ve got some fantastic music! I love it all. You are a talented composer, my friend.
Also, Dave, I just uploaded a new town song. You think you could add that to the blog? If not, that’s completely fine.

Do you think this game will be more like Mother 2 or Mother 3. I hope it’s more like Mother 2.
February 28th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
@Kevin
It’s posted in the fan submissions section under your name. It’ll be in the next update post.
@Poo
It’ll have elements from both games. So you could sort of say it’s a mix of both.

I think the Saturn Reef song is pretty awesome… Imagine Mr. Saturns living underwater??? That’d be epic!

Guess what that is? Hahahaha Firefox…
March 1st, 2010 at 9:50 pm
Yep that’s that thing. What about Firefox?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:56 pm
The source code for pages is very easily accessible.
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:48 am
Oh yeah, go for it. While finding them just by looking around could be more of an exciting and fun challenge, looking at the source is another viable option.
I guess I could have hidden them better. But still, with Firefox’s in-code links to css files and the like, it makes it really easy to find things.

how’s all the programming going?
March 6th, 2010 at 1:24 pm
Pretty good. I’m certainly making progress.
March 7th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
The Dave I would like to know why my song Bionic Attack didn’t get in I checked the fan submissions under my names anyway I don’t get why it wouldn’t get in if theres something wrong its completely fine I just want to know why

Submissions must be original work. The mp3 you submitted was two battle themes from Earthbound overlayed with some added effects.

“we are all waiting on you, as we have been for a long time.
Don’t let us down; I have high hopes for your game, and im sure that I can speak for the rest of us when I say,
we hope it blows the other mother games out of the water.
Your doing a good job,
and your entire team/fans all deserve respect…. See More
this game might not change the world.
but it will change OUR world.
thanks again mother 4 team.”
Sound Familiar?
I am Ray. The one with the profile picture on the very beginning of your Facebook page.
Fans, I want to tell you that I am very impressed with what you have done.
All of you have inspired me to start doing work on sprites.
in fact, I have all of the mother 2 sprites of myself completed, as a project that was started amongst me and my friends.
Ill start making sprites for Mother 4 in my spare time.
thank you mother 4 team, and fans for your wonderful work.

Looking through the music, I really enjoyed the ‘Busy Town’ music from PinkNoiseJake. It has a great vibe to it without drawing too much attention, something great for hub-area background music. The Smell of Wildflowers was quite nice too, from Armanky. It’s very cheerful, and encouraging. And Saturn Reef is a great look at the classic Saturn theme.
March 9th, 2010 at 10:12 pm
Wow The Dave how did you find out it was two music files from Earthbound with added affects? I took Kraken of the sea and another one. Wow you got good technology over there don’t you.
March 10th, 2010 at 1:17 am
@Exile
Thanks for the kind words!
@Softspoken
Those are some of my favorites as well. I may be generalizing, but Mother fans sure seem to have quie a bit of talent up their sleeves.
@Maskedman
Yep. I’ve got these two fancy new devices. They’re called ears; they plug right into the sides of your head.
March 10th, 2010 at 7:13 am
cool I guess… I’m not good at music cause I never really had an interest in music so I should get on still with my mother 4 starting screen. By the way all those starting screens is there a possible chance it will get in to the game? I use macromedia fireworks:-)
March 10th, 2010 at 4:30 pm
Yeah, Armanky’s were probably my personal favorite. However, the “Spicy Guys” one, I feel, has more of a “Terranigma” feel to it than “Mother”. Just my personal opinion.
March 11th, 2010 at 6:31 am
Really? I thought Spicy Guys sounded like pokemon if anything, which is a good sign by the way, sounds more like official music for a popular RPG.
Love the Saturn Reef song, for some reason though, I didn’t think of water, instead it took me back to Paper Mario 64, ah the memories. It has that similar style, love it, that song is SO going on my Ipod!
March 11th, 2010 at 7:22 pm
Can I get some opinions on my submissions? I enjoy the celebration of Armanky’s work, but I’d like to hear what you guys think of the music I made as well. I’ve never played a Mother game, and I’ve only heard a few of the songs, but I’m hoping these are appropriate for a new Mother sequel.
March 11th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
Appreciate the comments! This is also not the first time Spicy Guys has been compared to Pokemon music. I haven’t played the GBA games in a while, but I remember that accordion pretty much being a signature instrument.
I’m also sad that Kevvviiinnn’s hasn’t gotten more of a response, because I really like your work. The tropical thing is one heck of an earworm, and I love the sudden transition and the strings at 0:43. I will say, however, that the trumpet doesn’t blend very well and gets a little bit on the ear-piercingly high side, especially at the first bridge into the main melody. It’s especially noticeable with headphones.
Your name input music is great, and I’m curious to know how you threw in the crowd/static noises from EB at the beginning there. The melody’s pretty good, but I feel like the second track at the beginning doesn’t harmonize well in a couple of spots. The rest of it is really cool though, especially considering how much I’ve been struggling to come up with a melody tune in this style.
I also like the Busy Town theme. I could actually see it as name input music as well, maybe. It’s kind of similar to Mother 3′s in some ways, especially with the synth strings.
March 11th, 2010 at 10:09 pm
Kev: I enjoyed your Tropical 1. It felt like you succeeded with the theme, and it has a lot of life to it. An island resort, for sure.
But about Name Entry… It honestly sounds more like battle music at times, but it seems to switch between two different feels of that as well. It features a heavily synthesized and childish tune with xylophone, that sounds perfect for a battle theme motif. Then after, with the odd noises, it hits a different feel especially with the music at around 0:23, before it switches to that ‘child’ part again. I really like it, but it sounds like two seperate battle music themes in the works to me. But both themes sound very good stylistically for the Mother series, in my opinion.
Melody is very nice. Like a cross between a child’s bedroom and a grand entrance hall. I can see it as a memory background music, or as someone’s home, probably a secondary but important character.
March 12th, 2010 at 12:08 am
@Kevvviiinnn:
I must agree with Armanky, the trumpets get a little loud on Tropical 1, but the song is good otherwise. I like how both of you have the same quality in terms of style, you’re pretty much on the same level. Melody 1 reminds me of Chrono Trigger in a way, it has a similar emotional feel to it.
Armanky is better suited for area BGMs whilst your songs are better for cutscene music, or a theme song of a certain person (kind of like how Pigmasks have their own theme). Name Input 1 sounds like a theme for a tutorial rather than a naming screen, or like a waiting room…. this is all opinion though right?
March 13th, 2010 at 1:59 am
I have to ask two questions about this game. Will it be as sad as mother 3 was and are you guys going to put sounds like in mother 3 where you would always hear porky’s theme somewhere and in mother 2 where you hear those weird sounds in caves?
March 13th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
These submissions are top of the line.
March 23rd, 2010 at 7:31 pm
I would love a “real” final Boss battle, but then, it wont be a mother game. Making the way you defeat the final enemy having to do with your quests like in the first mother game would be nice. Is good to see the main hero has a unique sickness to him like in the first two mother games.
March 30th, 2010 at 12:34 am
@PigmaskSturm
I’m one of the composers. Yes, we are working on making the game music with all the lovely quirks we know and love. Plenty of background noises and samples.
All the music in this update is quite good, I must say.
Keep it up.

My favorites are “The Smell of Wildflowers” and “A Quiet Investigation.”
There’s also something I want to note: YOU HAVEN’T POSTED ANYTHING IN ALMOST 2 MONTHS! WHAT THE HECK!?!?!?!?
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:14 pm
Yeah well things happen. We’d like to get some stuff out to you soon, but I dunno if that will actually happen.
CERTAIN PEOPLE haven’t been on the ball lately. Like me.
